Linux Is Best

Arch Linux has a little secret that the "old school" users, don't like to promote. -- A hidden GUI installer.

Burn the Arch Linux ISO to USB (or CD/DVD).
Boot from the USB (or CD/DVD).

When Arch starts, you'll see the terminal, but instead of going through the lengthy and complicated process outlined by Arch Wiki, type archinstall and press enter.

This GUI is text based, but very easy to navigate. Use arrow keys to navigate, and a mix of space and tab to select, with your enter key to confirm. You can move back and forth throughout the selection, undo changes, or just navigate around before making your choices. Nothing is final until you go all the way down to the "install" option, and even then it will ask you to confirm.

Ugh, Python got over 500 #GSoC applications this year and so many of them are absolutely trash, didn't follow any of the instructions. Most years about half of our applications are like this. But usually we have a lot fewer applicants and the submissions were blank files not plausible AI nonsense.

So I'm stuck reading hundreds of incredibly low quality nonsensical submissions today in hopes to take some workload off my other unpaid volunteer mentors. This is not the volunteer gig I signed up for 15 years ago when it was mostly working with new contributors and not their AI chatbots and I'm grumpy.

Die Deutsche Verwaltungscloud (DVC) soll Behörden digital souverän machen – doch der Bund bleibt außen vor: Die „Netze des Bundes“ sind veraltet und technisch nicht kompatibel. Laut einer Anfrage der Linken fehlen Konzepte, Netz- und Cloud-Architekturen strategisch zu verbinden. Der geplante Umbau soll bis 2030 dauern. Anke Domscheit-Berg kritisiert das als schwerwiegenden Fehler und bemängelt fehlende Leitlinien für Cloud-Entscheidungen. Die Cloudausgaben des Bundes stiegen 2024 auf 286 Mio. €, doch Open Source spielt weiter kaum eine Rolle. Dabei zeigen BKA und ZITiS, dass Open-Source-Software Sicherheit fördern kann. Domscheit-Berg warnt zudem vor Abhängigkeiten von US-Hyperscalern: 32 Dienste seien bereits im Einsatz, meist ohne echte Ende-zu-Ende-Verschlüsselung. Digitale Souveränität müsse höchste Priorität erhalten – als Kanzlerangelegenheit.
