"Even as queer and trans Iranian asylum seekers and Afghan refugees who left Iran for Turkey do not fall under the same category according to the UNHCR’s criteria, they have something in common: they are economic refugees. Yet the UNHCR does not recognize economic marginalization as grounds for granting asylum. If it did, a large number of people in the world (including in the United States) who are affected by global capitalism’s economic violence (such as lack of access to universal health care in the United States) would be eligible for asylum."

Over at TikTok Nzigire has made a good update on Trump cancelling aid to #refugees in Africa. A judge has overturned this decision, and we are waiting to see what happens next. Good sound from 00:33.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is planning to revoke temporary legal status for some 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the conflict with Russia, a senior Trump official and three sources familiar with the matter said, potentially putting them on a fast-track to deportation.
The move, expected as soon as April, would be a stunning reversal of the welcome Ukrainians received under President Joe Biden's administration.

The new ban could affect tens of thousands of #Afghans who have been cleared for resettlement in the US as #refugees or on Special Immigrant Visas because they are at risk of #Taliban retribution for working for the #US during the war.

…The #State Dept office that oversees resettlement is seeking an exemption for Special Immigrant Visa holders from the #TravelBan.…

That office, the Coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts, has been told to develop a plan by April for its closure.

A global solidarity post: we’re currently witnessing the Trump/Musk regime pushing through their “America First” foreign policy. US global power will now become purely extractive, transactional, and ethnonationalist, harkening back to McKinley in the 19th century, shedding any humanitarian elements developed during the post-WWII consensus.

That’s the big picture historical view. In the here and now, this means people are starving and dying as US aid is abruptly withdrawn.

We’d like to encourage support for those left hanging dry.

The Atlanta metro area is home to many refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan, three countries of many whose US-subsidized food aid has been interrupted or made precarious. Many refugees here are helping support those back in their home countries. Women Watch Afrika - womenwatchafrika.org/services/ - is a local organization engaging in mutual aid, and the IRC - rescue.org - is an NGO with a base in Atlanta that engages in direct aid to refugees here and abroad.

We also encourage support for anti-authoritarian and anarchist Ukrainians against Russian imperialism. Solidarity Collectives - solidaritycollectives.org/en/ - has been providing support to anti-authoritarian fighters who choose to fight within the Ukrainian armed forces, and also provides rescue and medical aid. Now that Russian and US imperialism have become increasingly aligned, in the light of global solidarity, supporting their brave resistance is even more crucial.
